The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has requested the district administration to identify 47 hectares of land to be handed over to the forest department in return for the equal amount of forest land to be acquired for its proposed inner ring road project.

“The proposal for acquisition of the forest land has been submitted to the district collectorate. However, there is a need to provide alternate land of the same area to the forest department in return for land for the ring road. The discussion on transfer of land can take place after the alternative land to handover to the forest department is identified,” said Ramdas Jagtap, Deputy Collector and Public Relations Officer of PMRDA.

The PMRDA had proposed a 110-metre-wide and 128.08 km-long inner ring road in the metropolitan region to divert heavy traffic passing through the city from the adjoining districts. However, the development of a 40-km stretch of the ring road from Parandwadi in Maval to Solu in Khed has been handed to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) as it is supposedly being merged with the proposed outer ring road being developed by the MSRDC.

The PMRDA has reduced the width of its remaining stretch of the proposed ring road to 65 metres and it has been incorporated in the draft development plan of the metropolitan region.

“The work of preparing Detailed Project Report (DPR) and acquisition of land for the 65-metre wide ring road is being prepared. The proposal for acquiring the land for the first phase of the project in Solu, Nirgudi and Vadgaon Shinde villages has been submitted to the district administration. Overall the land acquisition for the 65 metre wide and 88.08 km long ring road will be 46.84 hectares and it has been informed to the forest department a few days ago,” he said.

Meanwhile, an officer with the district collectorate said that the collectorate received a proposal from the PMRDA last week seeking land for the ring road project. The PMRDA has also requested to identify land that can be transferred to the forest department in return for forest land likely to be acquired, the officer said.

The ring road is an ambitious project on the priority list of the Maharashtra government to resolve traffic issues of Pune city, the officer said, adding that the district administration would soon start working on the request.
