‘Basket fishing hitting traditional business’
Vasco: Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) have demanded immediate action against rampant illegal ‘basket fishing’ in the Zuari bay at Vareg island.
GRE general secretary Olencio Simoes told reporters that some non-fishing communities are actively involved in basket fishing, which affects the business of the traditional fishermen.
“It is also a violation of the fishing ban, which is on. Though a new trend, basket fishing is growing,” he said.
The GRE in association with the St Joseph Vaz College and Chicalim Youth Farmers Club planted mangroves at Vareg island to protect the coast and marine life on World Environment Day on Monday.
