Nagpur: Nataraj Niketan and Maitri Pariwar, two prominent cultural groups in Nagpur, have embarked on a unique environmental initiative, starting with Nagpur and Chandrapur. On the auspicious occasion of Vat Purnima (June 3), a day dedicated to the worship of banyan trees, the groups planted saplings of the banyan tree in Nagpur and Chandrapur.
Additional saplings were also planted in and around Nagpur on World Environment Day, which was celebrated on Monday.
The goal is to plant 300 saplings this season and ensure their care for the next three years.
Mangla Witekar, president of Nataraj Niketan, said that the plantation drive is part of the ‘Banyan Tree Festival,’ a national initiative involving 300 cultural groups across India. The festival will be held from June 3 to June 9, during which banyan saplings will be planted at various locations.
“This endeavour is set to establish a world record. We are not only planting trees but also committed to nurturing them for the next three years. We are inviting individuals to join us in this mission,” Witekar said.
Mukund Patrikar, secretary of Nataraj Niketan, pointed out that e-certificates will be awarded to all the individuals participating in the banyan sapling plantation. “Those who care for the tree for one year will receive a gold certificate, while those who successfully keep the tree alive for two years will be honoured with the ‘Green Revolution Pin.’ The banyan plantation project aims to create a new milestone and is under the scrutiny of Guinness World Record judges,” he said.
Besides their cultural significance, the banyan trees play a vital role in the environment. They are known for their ability to provide shade, purify the air, and contribute to the overall well-being of the ecosystem.
“By undertaking this plantation project, the cultural groups are not only setting a record but also demonstrating their commitment to preserving the environment for future generations,” said actor Snehal Rai, who is brand ambassador of this project.
Rai attended the plantation event held at Chandrapur. In Nagpur, the event was held at PKV campus at Dabha on Amravati road. “Individuals eager to participate in the project may contact 9049116633 for further details,” said lawyer Madhura Vyas, coordinator of the project.
