Jaipur: After a four-hour long meeting, sanitation workers have gone on strike from Monday by boycotting night sweeping first. This will affect door-to-door waste collection process across the state.
The workers are demanding that staff from Valmiki community who have been working on contractual basis since 2018 be given preference in recruitment on regular basis. In April, after talks with sanitation workers, the state government had said that recruitment of over 13,000 workers will be done based on their union’s demands.
“After several rounds of talks with the officials, no revised recruitment advertisement was issued. The government had assured us of issuing revised notification, but even after over a month, no action has been taken, so we have decided to go on indefinite strike once again,” said representatives from Sanyukt Valmiki Evam Safai Shramik Sangh.
Meanwhile, sanitation workers from other communities said that they will continue to work and not participate in the strike.
“Sanitation workers of other communities will not boycott work. We will not allow the public to suffer,” said Rakesh Meena, a leader of the sanitation workers in the city.
