GUWAHATI: Assam Class X state board exam will cease to exist from next year, announced chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday.
Sarma told media persons that Matric or Class 10 boards will now be a school level exam. "Matric will be like a class exam from now onwards. It won't be a separate examination called matric and will be conducted by the respective schools or Academic Councils (district level internal exam boards)," Sarma said.
He informed that the Class X passing out examination will no longer continue to get prominence like it enjoyed when it was conducted as a board exam. This, Sarma said, has been decided as mandated in the National Education Policy, 2020.
"In Class 12, students will appear in board exam, not in Class 10. Though pass and fail system will be there in the Class X exam, students won't be required to take new admission in Class 11. It will be a continuous process," Sarma said.
In Assam, while the Class 10 state board exam was being conducted by Board of Secondary Education, Assam (Seba), the Class 12 state board exam was being conducted by Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC). Sarma said very soon, Seba and AHSEC will also be merged. He assured that none of the employees of the two state education boards will lose their jobs due to the merger.
Following an earlier decision taken by the state government to merge Seba and AHSEC, a committee was working out the modalities of the merger.
