'Tis the season for community garage sales in NKY

My haul from the Newport city-wide garage sale last year. I paid $40 for the brand new coat and wore it all winter.

As the weather gets warmer and people get eager to dump things they no longer need (How did I get three copies of the same book?) city-wide garage sales are getting underway.

Some people, like myself, grew up going to garage sales on Saturday mornings, paying 25 cents for a stack of books or $1 for a gently used pair of jeans. It's how my family made do on a tight budget and I've continued that tradition of penny pinching.

Last summer, I bought a brand new $40 jacket that I wore all winter and my boyfriend recently used our $10 food processor find to make black garlic burgers.

While garage sales have always been a modern day treasure hunt for thrifters, the demand for secondhand shopping has increased along with inflation.

According to a 2023 report, consumers say secondhand shopping is a way to stretch their budget while the price of groceries, gas, and household bills go up. The report says the U.S. secondhand market is expected to increase from $35 billion in 2021 to $82 billion by 2026.

We've rounded up some city-wide garage sale dates in Northern Kentucky to help you get some good deals this spring and summer. Most vendors accept cash and many will also accept payments via Cash App or Venmo.

If we left your city off this list, let us know at jolenea@gannett.com and we'll add you to our list.
