NIT Rourkela up 2 places in NIRF, Utkal, IIT slip

Bhubaneswar: NIT Rourkela was ranked 37th in the overall category of India Rankings-2023 under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), the highest among the government higher educational institutes in the state, improving its position by two places from last year.
The ranks were released by Union minister of state for education Rajkumar Ranjan Singh on Monday.
However, two premier institutions — Utkal University and IIT Bhubaneswar — have slipped from their ranks in the previous year. IIT Bhubaneswar was ranked 91st, down from 65 last year.
It was ranked 58th in 2021, 56th in 2020 and 46th in 2019. Similarly, Utkal University, a state public varsity, got a rank band of 151-200 against last year’s 101-150.
The rankings were announced for 13 disciplines/categories. The disciplines/categories are overall, universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sectors (included this year), management, pharmacy and innovation (included this year).
In the university category, Utkal University got a rank of 93 against 88 last year and 87 in 2021. The oldest university of the state has also received an ‘A’ grade of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), slipping from ‘A+’ grade it got last year.
In engineering category, NIT Rourkela was ranked 16th, while IIT Bhubaneswar got a rank of 47. Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla was in the rank band of 101-150.
In medical category, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has improved its ranking from 26 last year to 17.
