New Delhi: India has registered a significant decline in new covid-19 cases, logging only 124 infections in the last 24 hours, the health ministry said on Tuesday. The tally of active cases has also receded to 3,001.

According to health specialists, the number of hospital admissions has also reduced with the drop in reported cases. They, however, said elderly individuals with underlying health conditions remain susceptible to infection.

Medical experts suggest that such vulnerable populations should get booster shots if they haven’t already and continue adhering to covid-19 safety guidelines. The XBB.1.16 variant was largely responsible for the recent surge, but scientists suggest that the emergence of hybrid immunity in the Indian population – from both vaccination and prior infection – should prevent the current variant from causing severe illnesses.

About 445 million people have recuperated from the virus, including 314 in the last day alone. The recovery rate now stands at an impressive 98.81%.

The ministry has urged states and UT governments to implement a risk assessment-based approach to impede the virus’s spread. Yesterday, 40,594 tests were conducted, increasing the total to approximately 92.93 billion. Over 220.67 billion vaccine doses have been administered across the nation thus far, with 615 provided in the last 24 hours alone.
