The opposition had been pressing for a probe in the matter but had termed the panel as an eyewash and demanded an “unbiased investigation,” asking what a serving bureaucrat’s committee could do as the CM and his deputy were on stage at the event.
On April 6, a local organising committee had been formed under chairmanship of the Konkan divisional commissioner. The Kareer committee is to take a factual review of the delegation of work to various arms of the administrative machinery by the organizing committee. It will also examine work done by the machinery in providing immediate relief after the tragedy.
The Maharashtra Bhushan award function to felicitate social worker Appasaheb Dharmadhikari was held at an open ground in Kharghar as lakhs of his followers were expected to attend.
The state government issued a government resolution (GR) fixing four terms of reference for the panel on May 3. Officials said since the terms of refe-rence were fixed only on May 3, the onemonth deadline ended on June 4. Kareer confirmed that the panel has sought a one-month extension. So the report isnow expected in early July.
Four days after the tragedy, the state government had announced a one-man committee to probe the incident. In its report, the committee was also to include recommendations on how to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future.
