Jamshedpur: Jamshedpur (East) MLA, Saryu Roy on Monday appealed to all sections of society to spearhead a joint mission to revive ailing Subernarekha and Kharkhai rivers, the lifeline of the industrial town. Roy, also an environment activist, said domestic wastewater and industrial effluents are the principal sources of
pollution of the two waterbodies. A united approach from all segments of the society including industries and individuals should be there to clean the rivers and help it in flowing uninterrupted.
The veteran legislator was addressing the crowd of social, political representatives and environment lovers among others at the token sit-in organised by the Subernarekha Kharkhai Bachao Samiti at Gandhi Dham on the banks of Subernarekha on World Environment Day.
The residents should run a social hashtag campaign "mein bhi prayavaran prahari" on different social media platforms and voluntarily join the movement to clean and revive the rivers. He also said the manufacturing industries that have thrived in the surrounding of the two adjoining rivers over the decades are testimony to the fact that availability of the abundance of water played a crucial role in their growth in Jamshedpur and Adityapur.
"The companies have witnessed tremendous growth, but, the condition of the Subernarekha and Kharkhai got deteriorated over the period of time," he noted. Further, in 2008, the civic bodies of the town came up with initiative to appoint consultant, besides, readying detailed project report (DPR) for cleaning the two rivers in a phased manner, but, nothing materialised on the ground, he added.
The Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry, , Jamshedpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Center for Bharatiya Management Development and Confederation of All India Traders among other organisations, have pledged their support to save river endeavour.
