Smoke from wildfires in Canada continues to drift in the Ohio Valley Region, causing the sky to appear hazy.

Although the Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency has not issued another air quality alert, the National Air Quality Index has Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky in the orange and red zones, indicating that the air is unhealthy, mainly for sensitive groups.

Sensitive groups include people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, pregnant people and those who spend a lot of time outdoors.

Here's what the agency recommends you should do during unhealthy air quality conditions:

  • Keep outdoor activities light and short.
  • Consider moving all activities indoors.
  • Go indoors if you have symptoms.

How long will the haze last in Cincinnati?

According to the National Weather Service, smoke and haze may lead to subtle visibility reductions until the mid-afternoon on Tuesday, but should move out of the area by Wednesday.

Why is air quality poor in Ohio?

Fires in the eastern Canadian province of Nova Scotia prompted air quality warnings over the weekend in U.S., with a forest fire in New Jersey adding to the air quality issues. The fires in New Jersey have since been completely contained.

Smoke from a fire in Nova Scotia drifts southward on May 29, 2023.

More than 3 million acres have burned in 1,981 fires in Canada so far this year. While one fire has been brought under control, a second fire continues to burn as of Sunday, according to the Associated Press.
