MUMBAI: The state transport department booked 187 motorists for breaching speed limit of 120 kmph on Samruddhi Mahamarg past two months.
It also counselled owners of 13,651 vehicles which had worn-out tyres that needed replacement and denied entry to 642 vehicles which were completely "not roadworthy", according to data put out Sunday.
State transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar said that in past few days, crashes occurred mainly at night or early morning. "We will increase vigilance during late-night hours when speeding cases are more than day time," he said.
Other violators booked in past two months include 1,352 for lane-cutting, 1,623 were caught parking cars and heavy vehicles near the kerb of the highway which can prove disastrous, and 618 trucks and buses were caught for not having the mandatory reflectors.
Enforcement was done along a 600-km stretch on Nagpur-Igatpuri corridor. Maximum speeding was detected between Jalna, Srirampur and Nashik followed by speeding cases reported just after the entry point at Nagpur, said a senior official. Maximum illegal parking cases on Expressway were in Aurangabad.
Deputy transport commissioner (road safety) Bharat Kalaskar said there were two Expressways the government was keen to reduce mishaps - Samruddhi and Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
