Nagpur: A goldsmith, arrested along with his aide from east Midnapore in West Bengal, sneaked out of the toilet window of the Howrah-Pune Duronto Express and fled from the custody of Pune police on Friday. Sources stated that the accused,
Sanjay Kumar Jana, probably jumped off the train after it had slowed down between Narendra Nagar and Khapri.
Pune police personnel claimed that Jana bent a portion of the window glass for creating an escape route.
The Pune police, who have now registered a fresh offence against Jana at Government Railway Police (GRP) station at Nagpur, ensured that Jana’s accomplice Saurabh Maity was taken back.
An offence was registered against Jana and Maity for fleeing with 380gm gold of a bullion trader handed over to them for creating a jewellery. Jana was spotted in a CCTV camera fleeing with the gold. An offence was registered at the Faraskhana police station in Pune on May 4.
A team from Faraskhana police station had gone to east Midnapore in West Bengal to nab Jana and Maity. After netting the two, the cops had also procured the transit remand for them before leaving for Pune.
Jana was taking too long to come out of the toilet and even not responding to calls. Cops then alerted the railway authorities and security forces before breaking open the toilet door. They were shocked to see the rubber strip of the window panel removed and the glass cover bent.
According to a Pune police officer, who was in the team escorting Jana and Maity, the accused climbed the wash basin and slipped out of the window. “Jana has a slim body frame and so managed to sneak out of the gap created in the window,” he said.
Nagpur GRP team and Pune police conducted searches in nearby hospitals, clinics and dispensaries assuming Jana's may have been injured.
