JAISALMER: A day after a pregnant 27-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself before killing her four children by locking them inside grain boxes in Barmer on Saturday, the police Sunday booked her husband and in-laws for dowery death.
According to police, Urmila Meghwal first killed her four children: Bhavna (8), Vikram (7), Vimla (6), and Manisha (4), before taking her own life by hanging herself from a chunari inside a makeshift storeroom where grains were kept.
Urmila’s father Bena Ram on Sunday filed an FIR against his son-in-law Jetha Ram Meghwal and the latter’s family under IPC Sections 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 302 (murder), and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender).
The police said that Jetha Ram’s other family members are also listed in the FIR.
Urmila lived in Mandali village of Barmer.
She got married had been married to Jetha Ram on 2014. Jetha Ram worked as a labourer in the local mining areas around Barmer.
The shocking incident came to light on Saturday afternoon when Urmila's mother-in-law began searching for her.
She entered a makeshift storage unit in the house where grains were kept, she saw Urmila hanging from the ceiling.
She called other relatives and locals who continued their search when they found bodies of her four children inside drums used to store grains.
The bodies were transferred to the local hospital's mortuary, where a post-mortem examination was conducted on Sunday morning to determine the exact cause of death.
“We have examined the crime scene. The bodies were found inside large drums which are often used in this part of the desert district to store grains for a longer time,” said the official, adding that further investigation was underway.
