IIT-B points to improper rd concreting
Thane: Experts from IIT Bombay have identified several deficiencies in the construction of concrete and asphalt roads in the city. They have alerted the Thane Municipal Corporation about the issues and urged rectification to ensure the durability of the revamped stretches. The observations were made by the IIT team overseeing road works. After conducting an initial inspection, they held a seminar to discuss flaws and propose solutions to municipal engineers and contractors.
During the seminar, a senior civic official from the public works department (PWD) revealed that one of the identified shortcomings was the frequent cracking of concrete roads in certain areas. The experts also highlighted a substandard section of a road in Dnyaneshwar Nagar, resulting in the contractor being instructed to redo the entire stretch at own expense. To address the issue of cracking, the IIT team recommended that contractors and civic teams create cuts on the surface of freshly laid concrete roads at specific intervals, which would help prevent future cracks.
