10 injured passengers in Kol hospitals, 2 critical

KOLKATA: At least 10 injured passengers of the Balasore train tragedy are admitted in different hospitals of Kolkata.
Barring two, the condition of the rest are said to be stable. Sources in the health department said the total number of injured admitted across government hospitals in Bengal is 206 - majority of them at hospitals in Midnapore.
On Friday night, the state government started sending medical teams and ambulances to Balasore along with medicines and consumables. By now the teams have brought back 200-plus injured from Bengal and admitted them in different hospitals.
Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (IPGMER), SSKM Hospital, so far has received eight of the injured. While five were given primary treatment as they had minor injury, three are currently under its care. Biswajit Mali (24) of Howrah, who was thought to be dead, is recuperating well in the hospital's orthopaedic ward while Kalima Haldar (33) from South 24 Parganas and Riyaz Afridi (17) from Dinajpur are being treated for trauma injury.
"All the three who are currently under our care are in a stable condition," said IPGMER director Manimoy Banerjee.
Out of the six injured, who were brought to Medical College Hospital Kolkata (MCHK), two are now undergoing treatment at the hospital. One among the four treated and discharged was 33-year-old Arzu Begam of Assam's Charaideo district.
"Among the two admitted, one is Sukanto Mal (45), who's in ICCU after a surgery for abdomen injury, and the other, Fatema Bibi (29) from Basirhat, is being treated in trauma ward," said MCHK MSVP Anjan Adhikari. Mal was referred from Midnapore Medical College and doctors at MCHK conducted the surgery at 1am on Sunday.
Four injured are currently admitted at NRS Medical College while nine were treated and discharged. "One has severe head injuries and his condition is critical, while three others are stable," said Pit Baran Chakraborty, principal of NRS.
Indira Kumari, a railway employee who sustained elbow fracture and shoulder dislocation, is admitted at AMRI Mukundapur.
"Since Saturday, we have received 138 injured, most of them at Midnapore Medical College. Sixty-six of them have been discharged while four referred to four Kolkata hospitals," said West Midnapore CMOH Saumya Sankar Sarangi.
Sources said 47-year-old Poornima Bagha, who is admitted at Apollo Multispecialty Hospital, is critical.
