Coimbatore: Race Course was painted in rainbow colours as members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/transsexual, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual/allies, nonbinary/genderqueer (LGBTQIA+) community took out a pride march on Sunday to create awareness about gender equality.
Hundreds of people gathered at Thomas Park wearing colourful masks and holding flags and balloons to attend Kovai Vanavil Suyamariyathai Perani- 2023, organized by Kovai Vanavil Kootamaipu. Transgender activist Kalki Subramaniam led the rally.
“We took out the rally for our rights, respect, and equality. The pride march is happening in Coimbatore for the fourth time,” Kovai Vanavil Kootamaipu founder Vandar Kuzhali Karthikeyan told TOI. “We run a peer support group to give counselling to the members of the community. We also conduct monthly meetings and sharing circle sessions.”
