In a shocking incident, at least five students were feared drowned in the Ganga at Sangam in Daraganj area here on Sunday evening. The incident, according to the police, took place when a group of nine students arrived for swimming at Sangam and they were struck in deep water due to a heavy dust storm that hit the city during the evening hours.
Jal police divers and swimmers managed to rescue four of them, while the whereabouts of five others were still unknown.
All the five students – in the age group of 18-24 years – were feared drowned. The missing students belonged to Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. On being alerted, senior police officials, including commissioner of police (Prayagraj) Ramit Sharma, rushed to the spot and carried out the rescue operation.
Sharma told TOI that Jal police divers have managed to rescue four students while efforts are underway to trace the five missing students. He added that joint teams of Jal police and SDRF were carrying out search operations in the Sangam and adjoining areas.
