COIMBATORE: The cybercrime police on Saturday night registered a case against an unidentified online fraudster who cheated a 22-year-old city youth of 13 lakh by offering him an online job.
In his complaint, F Dominic Savio Chettiar, of Uppilipalayam, said he received a text message on his WhatsApp about an online job opening from an unknown number around 6.30pm on May 9.
“He contacted the number and the person who attended the call asked the youth to clear multiple tasks online. He then asked the youth to make investments for a higher return. The youth transferred 12.98 lakh in various instalments to the bank account number that the person shared with him,” the officer said.
When the youth raised suspicion over the unknown person’s activities, the officer said, the latter stopped communicating with him.
Based on the youth’s complaint, the cybercrime police have registered a case against the online fraudster under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 66 D of the Information Technology Act.
