CHENNAI: On the occasion of World Environment Day,
Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin on Monday appealed to the people in the state to join the 'Meendum Manjapai' movement to fight against the usage of plastics.
June 5 is observed as 'World Environment Day,' and the theme for this year is 'Solutions to Plastic Pollution.' Meendum Manjapai movement was launched to promote the use of cotton bags and to reduce the usage of plastics. The state government installed vending machines for cotton bags in public places to promote their usage.
In a tweet, Stalin asked people to avoid plastics. "Beat plastic pollution is the theme of the World Environment Day this year, and to reduce the excess use of plastics we started the 'Meendum Manjapai' movement. People should participate in the movement with a concern," said Stalin.
Stalin appealed to the people to segregate non-biodegradable plastic wastes at source.
State environment minister Siva V Meyyanathan appealed to the people of the state to plant more trees. "Without trees, we cannot breathe and the temperature will rise manifold. We must prevent destruction of forests. On World Environment Day, we shall pledge to plant more trees to maintain earth greener," Meyyanathan tweeted.
