BENGALURU: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the labour department and multiple NGOs provided food, drinking water, portable toilets and medical facilities to about 1,500 workers who had taken shelter at Byappanahalli railway station because of disruption in train services in the wake of the Odisha train disaster.
The journeys of dozens of trains plying on that route were suspended following the Balasore triple train collision. "...Workers who were supposed to go to Kolkata and northeastern states had to spend the day at Byappanahalli railway station, so chief minister Siddaramaiah had instructed the BBMP commissioner and officials of the labour department to arrange necessary meals and snacks for the passengers," a statement from the CMO read.
BBMP zonal and joint commissioners helped about 1,500 migrant workers. "Medical facilities and mobile toilets were arranged for them on behalf of BBMP. Volunteers of Mercy Foundation, Tauseef and Tanveer, other volunteers like Clifton Rozario and Maitreyi Krishnan and team joined hands to respond to the plight of passengers," the statement read.
According to KR Pallavi, joint commissioner, BBMP east zone, 1,200 to 1,500 people were forced to sleep on the station floor waiting for trains. Project Smile Trust, a not-for-profit, provided these people with food, water, blankets, medicines, and other necessities. They ran their drive from Saturday noon.
