Every year on June 5, the United Nations observes World Environment Day to create environmental awareness among masses. TOI's Mehak Jain highlights the steps taken by the district's schools and colleges to become a part of the global mass movement of positive behavioural change.
Milk bag recycling The campaign 'Milk Bag Recycling Project', which was started a year ago in March by Ludhiana Cares Ladies Society, involves collection of milk bags from students. With a year's collection of 200 kgs of milk bags, the schools have started getting plant grow bags, plastics benches and water pipes from the recycler in return. Currently, seven educational institutions, namely DAV Public School, BRS Nagar; Police DAV Public School, Civil Lines; Sat Pal Mittal School,; BCM Arya School, Shastri Nagar; BCM School, Basant Avenue; Nankana Public School and Khalsa College for Women, are a part of it. Two large drop boxes have also been installed in Chattar Singh Park at Model Town Extension.
Eco-bricks at DAV This year, DAV Public School, BRS Nagar, has taken up a new project- 'Plastic disposal trick-make eco-brick'. The students of Classes 3 to 12 collect plastic bottles and fill them with strips of plastic wrappers of various kinds. Students tightly pack these strips using wooden or metallic sticks and then cap the bottles up. These bottles are strong enough to replace normal clay bricks.Principal Jaswinder Kaur Sidhu said, "The students have been assigned the work of preparing more eco-bricks during holidays. The school plans to put them to use wherever possible."
Single-use plastic items banned at DCM DCM Presidency School has banned single-use plastic items on its campus with the aim to reduce plastic waste, promote eco-consciousness.
Principal Rajni Kalra said, "The students were educated through seminars and short sessions to invest in eco-friendly options."
No foil zone at BCMBCM School, Basant Avenue, has also been declared a 'no-foil zone'. Principal Vandana Shahi, "No student is allowed to carry food in foil paper. They bring their chapatis wrapped in cloth instead."
