TRICHY: Three people were killed and five others injured in a road accident involving multiple vehicles on Chennai-Trichy National Highway near Perambalur town early on Monday morning.
While an ambulance was rescuing the injured victims in an accident involving a tourist van and a tractor on the highway, a speeding Omni bus approaching the highway rammed into the ambulance, thus causing fatalities.
Police said that a tourist van travelling from Tiruvannamalai to Dindigul on Chennai-Trichy NH had attempted to overtake a tractor at around 2am.
While overtaking, the tourist van hit the tractor and came to a halt over the centre median of the highway.
The tractor overturned on the left side of the Chennai-Trichy NH. As the injured passengers in the tourist van alerted the 108 ambulance services, an ambulance from Perambalur reached the accident site near St Joseph’s school on the highway.
The ambulance parked over the Trichy-Chennai NH, the other lane of the NH, was rescuing the injured passengers from the tourist van.
Meanwhile, a speeding private Omni bus, proceeding towards Trichy from Chennai, to avoid hitting the tourist van at the accident site on the highway, breached the center median and rammed into the ambulance parked on the other side of the highway.
The deceased included a ‘108’ emergency ambulance services driver, identified as I Rajendran (45) and a native of Perambalur, and two passengers of the tourist van, identified as A Kuppusamy (60) and S Kavipriya (22), both residents of Dindigul. All three people were rescuing the injured passengers in the accident involving the van and the tractor.
Police said that the impact of the collision between the Omni bus and the ambulance was such that the mangled ambulance was dragged several metres away from the accident spot.
Senior officials from Perambalur district police inspected the spot and conducted inquiries.
Five people injured in the accident are being treated at Perambalur government hospital.
