COIMBATORE: A 21-year-old youth was murdered by his girlfriend’s relative at Mayiladumparai in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu when he reached her home around 12.15am on Monday to wish her on her birthday.
The deceased has been identified as V Prasanth of Gandhi Nagar at Sundarapuram in Coimbatore city. He was working as a loadman in a private company. He fell in love with an 18-year-old girl three years ago. Their parents came to know about the love affair and decided to conduct their marriage one year later.
Prasanth used to speak to his girlfriend over the phone daily. But her father had not allowed her to speak with Prasanth for the last two days, police said.
Prasanth decided to celebrate his girlfriend’s birthday in the early hours of Monday. He went to her residence at Vasantham Nagar at Mayiladumparai along with his three friends -- Dharani Prasanth, Gunasekaran and Abhishek -- on a scooter. Prasanth was under the influence of alcohol.
The four youths jumped the compound wall and knocked on the door. Her father and her mother’s cousin, M Vignesh, 29, a call taxi driver, opened the door. Prasanth called his girlfriend to greet her. Vignesh picked up a quarrel with Prasanth and his three friends.
In a fit of range, Vignesh took a sickle and assaulted Prasanth on his left chest and left shoulder. The friends took Prasanth on the scooter to hospital. When they reached near Sundarapuram, the vehicle ran out of petrol. They contacted 108 ambulance service and took him to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
The Chettipalayam police registered a case against Vignesh and arrested him.
