KOLKATA: Flight fares to Bhubaneswar, Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru have more than doubled on Saturday after demand for tickets on the route skyrocketed following the train accident near Balasore that hit trains operating to these cities.
Flyers said fares began to soar on Friday evening as news of the train accidents spread and passengers booked to travel by trains to these cities began to search for flights.
Fares to Bhubaneswar that were hovering around Rs 6,000-7,000 prior to the accident touched Rs 12,000-15,000 for travel on Sunday. "There are very few tickets available on a flight to Bhubaneswar. The rest are one-stop flights with fares starting Rs 26,000 and beyond," said a travel agent.
Fares to Visakhapatnam shot up from Rs 5,000-6,000 on Friday evening to Rs 14,000-16,000 on Saturday. On Sunday, direct flight fares have gone up to Rs 18,000.
Kolkata-Hyderabad flights are commanding fares of Rs 18,000, up from fares starting Rs 6,000. Even on Monday, the lowest fare available on a non-stop flight is Rs 15,000.
There are no direct flight tickets available on the Kolkata-Chennai sector on Sunday with passengers who were booked on Coromandel, Chennai Mail and other trains heading south queuing up for tickets. One-stop fares on Sunday start at Rs 20,000. Even on Monday, fares are hovering around Rs 20,000.
Fares to Bengaluru that are usually around Rs 9,000-10,000 was around Rs 24,000 on Sunday on a one-stop flight.kolkat
