BHUBANESWAR: Social media has been trending with aerial shots, photographs, videos and condolence messages soon after the triple train tragedy at Bahanaga in Balasore district on Friday evening.
World leaders and celebrities, common people, witnesses and survivors are pouring their hearts out on social media and expressing their grief and pain on the tragic incident that killed 288 people and injured around 900 people.
A survivor, Anubhav Das, who was travelling in the Coromandel Express, one of the three trains involved in the accident, shared chilling accounts of the train tragedy. "I am extremely thankful to have escaped unscathed. It probably is the biggest train accident. It is a scene that will keep haunting me for years to come. Not to exaggerate but I myself have witnessed more than 200-250 deaths. Families crushed, limbless bodies and bloodbath on the train tracks," Das wrote in his Twitter post.
Anubha Bharti, a youngster, wrote in a tweet, "Where would have all these people been headed and how their life would have changed with this. Whenever we travel longer distances, we have such a sense of purpose usually going to wedding, for a new job, to home, to study at a new place, or to start a new life. But they end up on a heap of bodies."
Netizens also raised questions about signalling and track safety and how train journeys in India can be made safer.
