CHENNAI: Southern Railway on Saturday announced the cancellation of half a dozen trains heading towards Kolkata and
Assam following the accident at Balasore.
A communication from Southern Railways said Bengaluru to Kamakya Express (12551), Bengaluru to Bhagalpur (12553), Villupuram to Purulia (22606), Thiruvananthapuram to Shalimar (22641), and Chennai to Howrah (12840) have been cancelled.
It also announced the diversion of Kanyakumari to Dibrugarh express (22503) via Vizianagaram and Jharsuguda junction.
Southern Railway will operate a special train from Chennai Central to Bhadrak with family members of those affected in the accident. The special train 02840 will be operated on the Chennai-Howrah section, says an official communication from Southern Railway.
One unscheduled special train from Bhubaneswar to Dr MGR Chennai Central Railway station left at 8.40 am on Saturday.
It was carrying stranded passengers of Coromandel Express (train number 12841) and will have stoppages provided at the scheduled halts of the express train, it said.
This train is expected to reach Dr MGR Chennai Central railway station around 9am on Sunday.
Services on the section had been disrupted due to the accident. However, they are expected be restored on at least one line within the next 24 hours as the railway authorities are working round the clock.
