A goldsmith arrested by Pune police from West Bengal in a case of cheating escaped from the toilet window of a train near Nagpur as he was being brought to the city by the Howrah-Pune Duronto Express. A search has been launched for him in the area, officials said.

Sanjay Jana, 28, a resident of Purba Medinipur District in West Bengal, worked as a goldsmith at a jewellery shop in Pune for the last three years. He was booked by Pune city police in a case registered at Faraskhana police station on May 6.

According to the police, Jana’s employer gave around 380 grams of gold to him and one Saurabh Maiti, another goldsmith employed at the same shop, to make ornaments. However, in the first week of May, the duo fled Pune with the gold. Their employer soon registered a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust with the Faraskhana police.

“The duo were traced to their native villages in Purba Medinipur district, West Bengal. A team was dispatched to West Bengal and they were arrested earlier this week. After securing their transit remand from a local court, the accused were being brought to Pune on the Howrah-Pune Duronto Express,” said an officer with Faraskhana station.

On Friday afternoon, when the train was between Nagpur Junction and Buti Bori stations in Maharashtra, Jana went to the toilet and did not come out for a while. When police personnel broke the door, they found that he had escaped through the window.
