AYODHYA: Beleaguered Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh took to social media on Friday to announce postponement of his proposed rally in Ayodhya on June 5.
Sources, however, said Singh had to call off the proposed rally of seers after the Ayodhya administration informed him of section 144 being clamped in the area where he wanted to hold the rally.
Facing allegations of sexual harassment levelled by women wrestlers, Brij Bhushan had apparently called a meeting of his supporters in Ayodhya on Monday as a show of strength. Singh had claimed that about 11 lakh people, including saints and seers, would be attending the rally.
"It was decided to organise a 'Sant Sammelan' in Ayodhya on June 5 to deliberate on the evil spreading in the society. But now that the police are investigating the allegations (levelled by wrestlers) and respecting the directions of the Supreme Court, the 'Jan Chetna Maharally' on June 5 has been postponed for a few days," Singh said.
Singh, a BJP MP from Kaiserganj in Uttar Pradesh, has repeatedly dismissed the allegations levelled by the wrestlers against him as 'motivated'.
Talking to TOI, Ayodhya district magistrate Nitish Kumar, said: "No permission for a rally was sought from us. Some seers had sought permission for religious congregation, and that permission is under consideration because we have already got a programme lined up at that venue."
