COIMBATORE: Three students of a private engineering college near Navakkarai here were arrested on Friday for selling ganja to other students. The KG Chavadi police have seized half a kilogram of ganja from them.
Police identified the arrested as M Arjun, 22, and J Akshay, 22, both natives of Thrissur, and V Arjun, 21, of Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district in Kerala.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that Arjun, a second-year BTech student, had procured ganja from a peddler named Vinith at a cost of Rs25,000 when he visited his hometown and supplied the same to his friends Arjun, a third-year-BTech student, and Akshay, a third-year biomedical engineering student.
"The trio started selling it to the school and college students at Pichanur and Navakkarai in small packets of one gram for Rs100. A police team led by KG Chavadi police sub-inspector Udhayachandran picked up one of the students, who was their customer, and he spilled the beans on the trio. They subsequently conducted a surprise raid at the rental rooms of the trio at Navakkarai on Friday and seized half a kilogram of ganja," a police source said.
Police booked the trio under Section 8(c) read with 20(b)(ii) A) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and Section 77 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and arrested them. They were later produced before a judicial magistrate, who remanded them in judicial custody the same night.
