PremiumOdisha train accident: The driver of the Coromandel Express, which was involved in the three-train crash in Odisha’s Balasore district, has said that he moved forward on a loop line only after he received a green signal. It was on the loop line that a goods train was stationed. The railways said the driverwas "not over-speeding" nor he jumped any signal, virtually clearing his role in the Odisha train accident which claimed the lives of 275 people and wounded as many as 1,175.
In a statement, Jaya Varma Sinha, Member of Operation and Business Development, Railway Board said the officials were making sure the evidence does not get tampered and any witness does not get affected during the investigation process.
“Safety is the top priority for Railways. We are making sure that the evidence does not get tampered and that any witness does not get affected," she said. Speaking about the driver of Coromandel Express train, Jaya Varma said, “The driver of the train who sustained serious injuries said that the train moved forward only after it received a 'Green' signal. Neither did he jump any signal nor the train was over-speeding."

"Green signal means that in every way the driver knows that his path ahead is clear and he can go forward with his permitted maximum speed. The permitted speed at this section was 130 kmph and he was running his train at 128 kmph which we have confirmed from loco logs," she said.
The crash involving Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express and a goods train occurred around 7 PM on Friday near the Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore, about 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar.
