Five outgoing trains from NE cancelled after Odisha tragedy
Rescue operation in progress at the accident site in Balasore on Saturday
GUWAHATI: The train tragedy that took place in Odisha's Balasore has led to the cancellation of five outgoing trains from the northeastern region, while 10 outgoing and incoming trains towards the region have been diverted and several other trains were running late amid the ongoing rescue operation on Saturday.
At least 288 people were killed and over 1,000 injured in the three-train collision on Friday.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is yet to confirm the causalities or names of those from the northeast who have been injured or trapped in the accident. However, a few passengers from the region might have been travelling in the Coromandel Express that met with one of the worst rail disasters in the country.
The NFR chief public relations officer, Sabyasachi De, told the media here on Saturday that in view of the derailment of the Coromandal Express in between Kharagpur and Bhadrak section, five trains that were scheduled to run to different south and west Indian cities have been cancelled. The cancelled trains were about to commence their journey from Assam from June 3 (Saturday) to June 7.
Meanwhile, one Rupak Das, who hails from Biswanath Chariali in Assam, in a video message said he was heading to Chennai in the Coromandel Express when the disaster took place. "All of a sudden I felt the jerk and the train slipped down from the tracks. I hugged the seat feeling that death is near. Many other coaches that were ahead were scattered within moments," Das claimed. He said the coach in which he was travelling overturned, though he had a miraculous escape.
