Odisha Train Accident Updates: 48 Trains Cancelled, 39 Diverted After Accident, Say Officials

At least 261 people were killed and 900 were injured when a passenger train hit the derailed coaches of another train in Odisha's Balasore Friday evening. 

The crash, one of the deadliest in India in recent times, involved the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, and a goods train.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has declared one-day state mourning  in view of the horrific train crash.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced compensation of ₹ 10 lakh for those who have died, ₹ 2 lakh for those seriously injured and ₹ 50,000 for those who sustained minor injuries in the accident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi too expressed his distress over the accident, and announced a compensation of ₹ 2 lakh for the family of the dead and ₹ 50,000 for the injured from the PM's National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

"Biggest Railway Accident Of 21st Century": Mamata Banerjee On Odisha Train Crash

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached Odisha's Balasore in the wake of accident involving three trains in which 261 people lost their lives and described it "biggest railway accident of 21st century". Coromandel is one of the best express trains. I was the Railway Minister thrice. From what I saw, this is the biggest railway accident of the 21st century," Ms Banerjee told reporters. She said that the West Bengal government will provide Rs 5 lakh each to the family of the people from the state who died in the accident.

Over 3,400 Passengers Were Travelling In Two Trains, Say Officials
The crash saw one train ram so hard into the other that carriages were lifted high into the air, twisting and then smashing off the tracks. Another carriage had been tossed entirely onto its roof, crushing the passenger section. Over 3,400 passengers were travelling in two trains, according to railway officials.

Odisha Rail Accident: 2 Trains With 1,200 Stranded Passengers To Arrive At Howarh
Two trains carrying around 1,200 stranded passengers of the trains involved in the gruesome accident at Bahanaga Bazar in Odisha's Balasore district will arrive at Howrah on Saturday, a South Eastern Railway official said. Deputy Commissioner of Police in Cuttack, Pinak Mishra said on Saturday that all security precautions to admit the injured were put in place following the Coromandel Express derailment on Friday in Odisha's Balasore. Speaking to ANI about the incident, the Cuttack DCP stated that the victims of the Balasore train collision could be shifted to the medical college and hospital in Cuttack.
