Odisha train accident is being termed the worst train mishap since 1995 and has claimed around 290 lives, while more than 900 people are injured. The condolences for the victims of the Odisha train accident are pouring in from various parts of the world with Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Varun Gandhi requesting his fellow MPs to donate part of their salaries to the families of those killed and injured.
"The train accident in Odisha is heart-wrenching. We should stand in support of the grieving families like a rock. I appeal to all my fellow MPs to aid the grieving families by giving a part of our salaries to them. They should be given support first, and then justice," Varun Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.
The Railway Ministry has announced a relief of ₹10 lakh for the kin of the deceased and ₹2 lakh for those seriously injured in the Odisha train accident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced an ex-gratia relief of ₹2 lakh for the kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 for all those who are injured.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also announced a relief of ₹5 lakh for the kin of the deceased and ₹1 lakh for all those who are seriously injured.
PM Modi assures ‘stringent punishment’ for guilty
PM Modi on Saturday visited the site of the Odisha train accident in Balasore and also met the victims of the train mishap in hospitals. The Prime Minister assured that the government will do everything to help victims of a horrific three-train crash in Odisha and those found guilty would be ‘punished stringently’.
“It's a painful incident. Government will leave no stone unturned for the treatment of those injured. It's a serious incident, instructions issued for probe from every angle. Those found guilty will be punished stringently. Railway is working towards track restoration. I met the injured victims," he said.
