The Family was a New Age group formed in Australia in the 1960s by yoga teacher Anne Hamilton-Byrne that taught a mix of religious principles. They believed that Hamilton-Byrne was the reincarnation of Jesus, but she was eventually charged with conspiracy to defraud and to commit perjury. This story is the focus of The Clearing, an eight-part Australian psychological thriller that is inspired by the real-life story of the female-led cult, which saw children being abducted and placed into it. The story is based on the fictionalized account told in the J.P. Pomare book In the Clearing.
The Clearing is praised for delving into the psychology of cults without being exploitative, with lead actors Miranda Otto (The Lord of the Rings film series) and Teresa Palmer (A Discovery of Witches) being praised for their performances.
Available on FX on Hulu, Class of ’09 may just be your next spy thriller binge favorite. The suspense thriller stars Kate Mara (Chappaquiddick) and Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) as FBI agents dealing with the increased use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology within the U.S. government.
Told through multiple timelines, Class of ’09 follows the agents as they progress through their ever-changing jobs, with AI technology becoming more and more ingrained in what they do and having far-reaching implications. The limited series includes eight exciting, high-action episodes.
A Small Light tells the real-life story of Miep Gies, who sheltered her employer Otto Frank’s family during World War II, including Anne Frank, who famously went on to pen a diary about living in hiding under Nazi persecution. Bel Powley (The Morning Show) stars as the title character.
Available on National Geographic with episodes streaming the following day on Hulu (as well as Disney+), the biographical drama has been criticized for some historical inaccuracies. While the character may be a combination of Gies as well as Bep Voskuijl, who also helped the family and smuggled notes from the building, A Small Light is a gripping drama nonetheless, that examines one of the biggest historical events of the 20th century.
A spin-off of the popular FX series Sons of Anarchy, this crime drama follows the Mayans M.C. motorcycle club as they become allies of the Sons. Set in the same universe, the series begins two years after the events that ended SOA’s run, miles away in the fictional town of Santo Padre in California.
While Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes is a gifted young man, he finds himself being pulled into the dark criminal underworld of the cartel seeking vengeance, and, like Jax Teller from SOA, can’t seem to make his way out. Mayans M.C. concludes with its fifth and final season.
Kerry Washington is back on the small screen in Unprisoned, a comedy about Paige, a single mom and therapist who finds her already messy life thrown for a loop when her father is released from prison after serving a 17-year sentence. He moves in with her and her teenage son, and the new family of three must find a way to get along.
While the show is a comedy, it also unpacks a lot of more dramatic topics like childhood trauma, forgiveness, grudges, and boundaries. Receiving high praise in early reviews, Unprisoned is dubbed a “snappy comedy” with heavy themes, with both lead actors, including Delroy Lindo as Paige’s father, Edwin, shining in their respective roles.
