16 gold biscuits recovered from toilet of the airport on Friday
VARANASI: Customs officials recovered 16 gold biscuits of 1.87 kg in weight, from a toilet of Lal Bahadur Shastri International airport in Varanasi. Cost of the recovered gold was estimated as Rs 1.12 crore.
Customs officials, on Friday, disclosed that after the Air India flight IX 184 from Sharjah-Varanasi landed at LBSI Airport on May 31, their team mounted a strict vigil during clearance of passengers who arrived by it. During the search, washrooms of the airport were also checked by the staff.
"In one of the tops of concealed urinals, one black plastic packet was found," said the officials, adding this unattended packet appeared to be a little bit heavy. On opening the packet, 16 gold biscuits were found inside it. An authorized valuer was called to assess its value. During the examination by the valuer, the weight of 16 gold biscuits of foreign origin was found to be 1866.100 grams, said the officials adding, it was valued at Rs 1.12 crore.
After assessment of its value, the gold biscuits were seized under the provisions of the Customs Act 1962. Further investigation is continuing in this connection, they added.
