1,000 old cartridges found from canal
Ludhiana: Doraha police have recovered around 1,000 live cartridges of weapons from Sirhind canal in an operation after a villager found a few cartridges in the water body on Friday morning.
Police officials said a villager from Gurthali area had gone to bathe in the canal around 8.30am when he found a few cartridges. Later, the villager informed the village sarpanch about the cartridges, who further informed police about the discovery.
Cops from Doraha police station and DSP Payal Harsimrat Singh reached the spot and started a probe into the matter.
The DSP said with the help of divers, they later searched the canal area. He said around 1,000 old and rusted cartridges, but live were found from the canal bed.
The police officer said the recovered cartridges will be disposed of after following due procedure. He suggested that the cartridges seem to be of .303 rifles or SLR (self loading rifle) etc. The DSP said they have lodged a report into the matter at Doraha police station.
Police sources said the cartridges were found within a distance of 20 to 25 metres in the canal bed. They added that it seems someone may have thrown the cartridges long back.
