Mangaluru: Even as the only source of water for the city at Thumbe is decreasing rapidly, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has planned to stop pumping of drinking water to major parts of the city for two days.
While the arrival of the monsoon is expected on June 4 as per IMD prediction, the city corporation has decided to take up necessary pipeline replacement works for two days and stop pumping water to the city during the period.

At present, water is pumped to Mangaluru City South and Mangaluru City North zones on alternate days. In a circular issued on Thursday, the MCC stated that the water supply will be completely disrupted in the city from 6am on June 4 to 6am on June 6.
Accordingly, there will be no water supply in Bendoorwell low-level areas including PVS, Lady Hill, Bunder, Bejai, Sooterpete, Mary Hill, Pachanady, Ashoka Nagara, Derebail, Kodialbail, Kadri, Naguri, Surathkal, Katipalla, Kuloor, Jalligudde, parts of Kodikal, Kana, Bala, Kulai, Mukka, Panambur and other places.
The MCC will strengthen the 1,000 mm pipeline on Thumbe–Bendoorwell stretch at Adyar Katte and replace 900 mm pipeline at Kottara Chowki between June 4 and 6. An official said that the water level at Thumbe Dam has reduced to 2.2 m against the maximum storage of 6 m.
Meanwhile, the official said that the water level in the AMR dam, the upstream of Thumbe barrage has increased due to the pre-monsoon showers in the catchment areas.
“The water level in AMR dam has increased to 18.3 m against the maximum level of 18.9 m. Hence, the district administration may order release of water from the AMR dam in case the storage in Thumbe dam goes below the minimum level,” sources said.
