Coimbatore: The district is set to get two new all-woman police stations at Karumathampatti and Valparai sub-divisions.
Of these, what makes the Karumathampatti station special is that it has been set up at a British era, tiled roof building located inside the premises of the Sulur police station. The Valparai station has been set up in a community hall at Kottur.
The district’s rural police have six sub-divisions namely Periyanaickenpalayam, Mettupalayam, Karumathampatti, Perur, Pollachi and Valparai. Of these Periyanaickenpalayam, Mettupalayam, Perur and Pollachi sub-divisions already have an all-woman police station. The state home department recently sanctioned all-woman police stations for Karumathampatti and Valparai.
V Badrinarayanan, superintendent of police said, “We decided to set up the Karumathampatti all-woman police station within the premises of the station at Sulur. We renovated an abandoned British era building to set up this station. A woman police inspector and eight others have been appointed to the station. We will ensure that the heritage building is well maintained.”
Sulur inspector Mathaiyan said, the British had opened a police station at Sulur in Coimbatore on 2 October, 1934. The Sulur police station had been functioning out of this building until 2013, before it was shifted to a new building within the same premises in 2014. He added the renovation cost about 3 lakh.
Meanwhile, the Valparai all-woman police station was set up in a community hall at Kottur near Anaimalai. Superintendent of police Badrinarayanan said, “An outpost will also be set up at Valparai so people won’t need to travel to Kottur to lodge complaints. They can meet women cops at the outpost to lodge their complaints.”
Police sources said both the stations are ready for operations and that officials are waiting for orders from the chief office to open the stations. Both stations are likely to be inaugurated next week.
