Breaking the stereotypical notion about school toppers, Swarali Rajpurkar of Pune let herself loose on the premises of Deccan Education Society’s New English School on Friday, soon after the results of the Maharashtra SSC Class 10 board examination were out. She welcomed her impressive 100 per cent score in the examination by ecstatically beating the celebratory dhol-tasha. It is not just studies that she excels in — there’s kathak, music and the drums as well. But there is one thing she dreads – Mathematics.

“I haven’t yet overcome my fear of maths,” said the topper.

But her mother Shilpa Rajpurkar inspired her to let go of Swarali’s fear of the subject by making her practice arithmetic problems consistently for an hour every day. “I even encouraged her to pursue extra-curricular activities that helped her freshen the mind,” said Swarali’s mother.

Kajal Chowdhary, Swarali’s Maths teacher, recalled that right from pre-primary classes Swarali was a good student who participated in all cultural events at the school. “She is our child, and such an amazing result was expected from her. Although Swarali was a bit mischievous, she had been a topper from Class 8 and sincere throughout,” the teacher said.

Overwhelmed by the celebrations, she broke down in tears saying, “Practice makes a person perfect, truly!”

In the Class 10 results announced on Friday, 151 students obtained 100 per cent marks; 66,578 scored over 90 per cent and 19,344 between 85-90 per cent. Pune, with five students, was among seven out of nine divisions in the state with students who scored 100 per cent marks. Officials said the percentage of marks is calculated by the ‘Best of Five’ method which takes into consideration five subjects with best performances.
