Chandigarh: The affiliation of colleges in Haryana to Panjab University (PU) proposed by Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar has led to Punjab and Haryana ranging against each other, with Punjab governor and UT administrator Banwarilal Purohit tacitly favouring Haryana’s viewpoint.
It began with Khattar on Thursday demanding restoration of Haryana's share in Panjab University (PU) Chandigarh and affiliation of state’s colleges with the university during a meeting at Chandigarh chaired by Purohit and attended by Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann.
Underlining the need to make education accessible in rural areas as well, Purohit exhorted both the chief ministers that the matters related to Panjab University should be taken forward with mutual consent. “The issue of affiliation of Haryana colleges to Panjab University is not a big issue; it is possible. This collaboration of Haryana and Punjab will certainly be a good start,” he added.
Khattar argued that if colleges in states can be affiliated with international universities, Haryana colleges should get affiliated with PU.
After the meeting, Mann made it plain that the university is the heritage of Punjab and no change regarding it will be tolerated.
