In a first, Loyola School welcomes girl students
Thiruvananthapuram: Loyola School Trivandrum has rewritten history by welcoming girl students for the first time since its establishment in 1961. A total of 100 girls joined Class XI in the ICSE and CBSE blocks in the school on Thursday.
According to the principal of the CBSE block Fr Roy Alex SJ, the decision to admit girls to the school was a result of adhering to the national education policy and also placing importance on co-education and inclusivity on the campus. “All arrangements and facilities for these students, including works of more than 20 toilets in both blocks were completed at least a week ago,” he said.
It was Rev Fr Joseph Edamaram SJ, the first provincial of the Kerala Province of the Jesuits who established the school in 1961 at Palayam with Fr KV John SJ as the first principal and just 36 students on its rolls.
It was the third principal, Fr Antony Vachaparambil SJ, who was instrumental in moving the school in 1963 to the present campus. This was followed by the introduction of the ICSE course and an affiliation with Cambridge University.
A separate single-story junior school compound and a pavilion and canteen complex were erected in 1971-73, which got the school recognized by the Union government as the first boys-only school in Kerala for the placement of national merit scholars.
Parents of the new students are absolutely confident in the administration and faculty of the school in providing excellence in academics as well as co-curricular activities.
