Karunanidhi birth centenary: Stalin to garland MK’s statue in Chennai at 8am

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin would garland the statue of his father and late CM M Karunanidhi in Omandurar government estate on the Anna Salai in Chennai at 8am on Saturday, said a government release.
Born in Thirukuvalai in Nagapattinam district, Muthuvel Karunanidhi won assembly elections 13 times ever since his electoral debut in Kulithalai constituency in 1957. He was sworn in as chief minister in 1969 after the demise of C N Annadurai, and later in 1971, 1989, 1996 and 2006.
The five-time chief minister is remembered for implementing several welfare programmes, including free power, property rights for women, uzhavar santhai, varumun kappom, namakku name, Moovalur Ramamirtham marriage assistance scheme, Anna marumalarchi thittam, samathuvapuram, and members of all castes could become archakas in temples.
On Friday, a committee set up by the DMK for centenary celebrations comprising MPs Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, Tiruchi Siva, A Raja and Dayanidhi Maran, organisation secretary R S Bharathi and party spokesperson T K S Elangovan held discussions at party headquarters.
