Rajkot: A suspended electrician in Jamnagar district panchayat office was booked for stealing over 1,600 files pertaining to an alleged financial scam, said Jamnagar police.
Police booked electrician Harisinh Gohil on Tuesday night, based on a complaint filed by the deputy executive engineer of Jamangar district panchayat, Jayvirsinh Chudasama.
According to the police, district superintendent of police Premsukh Delu had formed a special investigation team to probe the burglary that occurred in the last week of May. Police added that the files were stolen to hide a scam of crores of rupees.
All files related to tenders and works allotted and payments made for electrical works are maintained by the electricity department. Police said that keys to the cabinet containing files related to budget and other financial transactions were with Gohil.
In his complaint, Chudasama alleged that Gohil was suspended on May 23 for irregularities in issuing work completion certificates and proposals. However, Gohil handed over the keys to the files cabinet and office to Chudasama only on May 29.
During investigation, it came to light that a month before the suspension, Gohil had come to the office in the night at about 9.30pm. The security guard at the district panchayat office told the police that Gohil had come in a tractor trolley. The guard added that Gohil took with him a number of files from the ground floor of the electricity department’s office. Based on the guard’s statement, Gohil was booked for burglary.
