The Pune Police has launched an investigation after a 16-year-old girl shared with her school teacher during a counselling session that she was gangraped by three men from her neighbourhood four years ago.
Police have arrested one of the three suspects — all in their late 20s, and neighbours of the girl, who lives with her family — and a search to nab the other two is underway, said officials.
Based on a complaint by the school authorities two days ago, following the 16-year-old girl schoolgirl’s narrative of the ordeal — who has appeared for her Class 10 exam this year — an FIR was registered at a police station in Pune City on Thursday.
A woman police official, counsellors from an organisation working on issues faced by children, and school authorities have also informed the victim’s family members about the same.
“The girl opened up to a teacher about the incident during a recent counselling session. The incident took place sometime between 2018 and 2019 — when she was only 12 years old. She does not remember the exact date and time… The victim was playing in an alley next to her house, when she spotted an object falling from the window of a house. She picked it up and went inside that house to return it. At this point, the three accused inside that house, who were in their early 20s then, started playing very loud music to mask her screams and raped her one after the other. They later threatened to harm her and her family members if she told anyone about what had happened,” said a police officer.
“After the incident was reported, we immediately launched a probe and registered an offence against the three men. We have arrested a 26-year-old man. A search is underway to nab the other two,” according to the officer.
