Man facing multiple charges after attempting to steal truck with children inside, Sioux Falls police say

A man is facing multiple charges after he attempted to steal a pickup truck with three children inside, ranging from 4 to 11 years old, while they were waiting for their parents, according to Sioux Falls Police spokesperson Sam Clemens.

At about 8 p.m. Thursday night, Clemens said a 28-year-old Wagner man entered the pickup truck in the 400 block of South Summit Avenue, with the belief that the man had intentions to try and take the vehicle. The 11-year-old girl left the vehicle to tell her parents.

Clemens said the man took off running when people in the neighborhood began to chase the suspect, who entered a store in the 600 block of West 11th Street. A security guard in the area saw the man enter the store, Clemens said.

There, the man hid in the bathroom, and the store manager or owner said they wanted the suspect to leave. When the security guard told the man he had to leave, he ended up flashing a knife and swung it at the guard and a scuffle ensued, Clemens said.

The security guard received minor injuries from the scuffle, Clemens said. The man is facing multiple charges including grand theft, two counts aggravated assault and three counts of simple assault, according to online court records. Clemens said the man also had a warrant from another county.

Clemens explained that although the man wasn't successful in stealing the car, in South Dakota, the attempt of a crime is the same thing as committing a crime.
