Which Northern Kentucky track and field athletes won state titles in 2023?

The Beechwood High School girls track team won the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Class 1A state championship June 1, 2023.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association state track and field meets run Thursday, June 1, through Saturday, June 3, for classes 1A, 2A and 3A respectively. Here are Northern Kentucky athletes who earned state championships in 2023.

Class 1A

Beechwood girls won a state title (100 points) and Walton Verona boys (64 points) won a state team title to give Northern Kentucky 11 state titles from the Class 1A meet Thursday, June 1.

Bishop Brossart girls 4x100 relay

Bishop Brossart girls won the 4x100 relay in a time of 50.36 on the efforts of Zoey Woosley, Hayley Hickman, Lauren Gooderson and Chloe Hein, Hein's second championship.

Beechwood girls 4x200 relay

Maddy Brauch, Maryah Counts, Lana Holt and Katie Kocan powered Beechwood to a state title in the 4x200 race with a time of 1:45.81.

Walton-Verona boys 4x200 relay

With the help of Hunter League and Tyson Smith, Grady Shay and Jackson Smith got another state title with their relay team, the 4x200. The boys finished first with a time of 1:31.49.

Beechwood girls 4x400 relay

Maddy Brauch and Maryah Counts got another state championship with the 4x400 team that, this time, includes Lily Parke and Catie Hazzard. The girls ran the race in a time of 4:11.10.

Bishop Brossart boys 4x800 relay

Ryan Clines, Brennen Callahan, Nick Heck and Nathan Ruth ran to a state championship in the 4x800 race with a time of 8:18.57, edging second-place Walton-Verona by more than four seconds.

Grady Shay, Walton-Verona

Shay won a state championship in the 110 hurdles at the KHSAA meet after finishing third in 2022. He ran a time of 15.32.

Walton-Verona senior Gray Shay, shown running the 110 hurdles in 2022, won a state championship in that event in 2023.

Jackson Smith, Walton-Verona

The junior won two more state titles for Walton-Verona when he won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.07 and the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.18.

Chloe Hein, Bishop Brossart

The senior won a state championship in the long jump with a mark of 17-8.75, which she posted in her sixth and final attempt.

Al Bessler, St. Henry

The senior also won a state championship in his sixth and final attempt in the triple jump, when he reached a mark of 43-0.
