Relief from heat as parts of state get rain, drops max temp by 5C

Panaji: The first day of June brought with it much-needed respite from the scorching summer heat. Parts of Goa experienced light to moderate rainfall and thundershowers on Thursday, with Quepem recording the highest rainfall at 90 mm.
Margao also received heavy rainfall (73mm). Other centres recorded rainfall on a lesser scale — Sanguem 21.4mm, Dabolim 12.5mm, Canacona 10.2 mm and Mormugao 6.8mm.
The fire services control room received three tree fall calls on Thursday.
The India meteorological department (IMD) had earlier forecast a thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and winds gusting to 30-40kmph at isolated places on Thursday. It had also said that light to moderate rain and thundershowers were very likely at a few places over Goa on June 4 and 5, while light rain and thundershowers were very likely at isolated places on June 2 and 3.
There was a drastic drop in the maximum temperature as the mercury came down by about five degrees from the previous day.
The IMD recorded a maximum temperature of 30celsius, three degrees below normal, in Panaji on Thursday. The minimum temperature also dropped by a degree or so to 25C. The maximum temperatures had been hovering around 35-36 degrees during the past few days.
The southwest monsoon has further advanced into some parts of the south Arabian Sea, Maldives and Comorin areas and some more parts of the south Bay of Bengal and east central Bay of Bengal. The IMD said that conditions are favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon into some more parts of the south Arabian Sea, Maldives and Comorin areas, south Bay of Bengal, east central Bay of Bengal and some parts of northeast Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours.
