Pros & Cons

When it comes to business, working from home, and working on the go, a good laptop can make or break your workday. And though you tend to get what you pay for when it comes to your laptop, that doesn’t mean that you should only look for big-ticket computers.

You need a machine that offers enough battery to get you through conference sessions and long meetings, a CPU that’ll deliver great performance even with a (couple) dozen tabs open, and something light enough to easily stash in a carry-on or tote. Everything else? That’s down to your own personal preference.

Still, shopping for a new bit of tech can be like wading through endless excel spreadsheets: mind-numbing stuff. Especially when you're not up to speed on all the specifications. But we've got the advice you need. Indeed, there are a few things to keep in mind when looking for a new business laptop. Here's everything you need to know.

How long should a laptop battery last?

As far as we're concerned, this comes top of the list when buying a laptop for business. You don’t want a machine that gives out when you're halfway through a report, when you're delivering a presentation, or during a Zoom call. You need a reliable battery.

There are still laptops with a short battery life of around six hours or so, but a little more money can sometimes get you up to 10 hours or more. Think about how and where you work, and find a machine with a battery life that aligns with your needs.

Does a laptop's weight really matter?

While you might be sitting at your desk with this laptop most of the time, it doesn’t mean that’s where you’ll stay. Look for a machine that isn’t packing too many pounds — you want to be able to throw it in a backpack, tote, or carry-on without it making your bag dig into your shoulders.

Should you consider a cheap laptop for business?

It’s one thing if your employer is springing for the tab, but if you’re self-funding this laptop, price can be an important consideration. While top-of-the-line machines might cost above £1,000, you can get great laptops for under a grand too — and we’ve included a range of prices below. Anything around 1.5 kg or lower is considered light.

What features should a business laptop offer?

It really depends on what you'll be using it for i.e. what your job entails. If you have a job that requires you to open lots of tabs and programs at once, a decent amount of RAM is useful (anything from 8GB of RAM upwards). If you do creative tasks in your job, such as design or video production, a powerful processor and graphics cards will be important. Also consider good security features, such as a webcam shutter and fingerprint sensor — especially useful if your laptop is storing sensitive documents.

What is the best laptop for business?

Picking the right laptop for you and your work can be a tricky task, but we can help make the process a whole lot easier. We have scoured the net for the best business laptops, and lined up a selection of options that should suit just about everyone.

You can find impressive models from top brands like Apple and Lenovo in this roundup. All you need to do is consider your preferences and priorities, and pick one.

These are the best laptops for business in 2023.

Best For Battery
Specs
  • Battery: Up to 19 hours
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Size: 13.4 inch
  • Storage: 512GB
  • Weight: 1.2 kg

The Dell XPS 13(opens in a new tab) is a powerful laptop that’s designed for business, as demonstrated by its ultraportable build and powerful performance. It's designed for high productivity, with 14 hours of streaming time on the FHD+ model and Killer WiFi connectivity to keep streams (and Zooms) smooth.

Your programs will look good on its Non-Touch Anti-Glare 500-Nit display, though Dell has placed the laptop’s webcam at the bottom of the display — a quirk we’ve never quite understood. At least it's centred, rather than off to the side like past models.

On the plus side, the fans have been redesigned so the machine won’t get quite as warm (or loud) an hour into your Zoom meeting.

The ultraportable computer is also great for business use due to its assortment of ports, brilliant display, and performance power. Its 11th Generation Intel Core i7 CPU and Intel UHD GPU combine to deliver a top-notch experience.

Specs
  • Battery: Up to 7 hours
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Size: 13-inch
  • Storage: 2562GB SSD
  • Weight: 0.44 kg

The ThinkPad X1 Nano(opens in a new tab) is light on its feet, both in terms of speedy performance and actual weight. It’s essentially a scaled-down, featherlight version of Lenovo’s iconic business-based ThinkPad laptop — Lenovo’s lightest ThinkPad yet, in fact — with decent processing power and a good-looking 2K display.

Other perks for business users? It has reliably excellent WiFi 6 connectivity, instant wake-up, and super-fast charging. There’s also a fingerprint identification reader and a dTPM 2.0 chip that helps protect your sensitive data.

The downsides are that there are no other ports beyond headphone jack and Thunderbolt 4s. And some users might also find the keyboard cumbersome, because the function and control keys are swapped.

But when it comes to everyday business use, it couldn’t be better. It’ll keep up with your web-based applications and it won’t weigh you down on the way to work.

Best For Video Calls
Credit: Huawei
Specs
  • Battery: Up to 10 hours
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Size: 14.2-inch
  • Storage: 512GB SSD
  • Weight: 1.26 kg

We are impressed with the Huawei MateBook X Pro EVO(opens in a new tab). Yes, it’s an Apple MacBook Pro clone, but that doesn’t change the fact it’s one of the best Windows machines in the business of, well, business. It might actually make you convert from Mac to PC.

It's certainly got power thanks to its Intel Core i7 processor and Intel Iris Xe graphics card. The machine features an immersive 14.2-inch 3K touchscreen in an almost bezel-less display. It’s also pleasingly lightweight, and has plenty of ports.

Where this machine really stands out, particularly in the business world, are its smart video conference features. It has FollowCam, which follows you around and keeps you at the centre of the shot, plus eye contact and virtual background features.

And if you have other Huawei devices, you can also connect and use as one integrated device, allowing you to easily share files between them.

Specs
  • Battery: Up to 18 hours
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Size: 14.2-inch
  • Storage: 512GB SSD
  • Weight: 1.63 kg

The Apple MacBook Pro(opens in a new tab) continues to be the best of the best thanks to Apple’s ever-brilliant operating system, user-friendly features, and powerful M2 processor. Whether you’re working nine-to-five or you’re a creative who relies on Adobe’s Creative Suite or Apple’s own Final Cut Pro, it’s undeniably fantastic.

The other thing we love about the new MacBook Pro? The battery life. It’s truly a dream, even if you’re spending the day multitasking to the max.

However, while the Apple MacBook Pro is considered one of the best laptops out there, there are a few gripes we’ve had with previous generations that persist. There’s still a lack of ports for a laptop that's meant for creatives and media types. And, of course, the big price tag isn’t for everyone. But Apple die-hards know this already.

Even so, there aren’t many better computers out there — and, of course, the cool factor is appealing. Even if you're just using it for basic workflow tasks and apps.

Best For Tight Budgets
Credit: Microsoft
Specs
  • Battery : Up to 13 hours
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Size: 12.4-inch
  • Storage: 128GB SSD
  • Weight: 1.13 kg

The Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2(opens in a new tab) feels intentionally limited — a means to keep you focused and productive. While this might seem like a bad thing for users who want to use their laptops to have all the bells and whistles, this is a very good option for others who just want to get work done with no distractions.

In truth, the pared-back design and spec are due to the fact this is a budget-priced model. Which is great if you need to get down to business without dropping too much of your investment money. And don’t count this device out. It’s powered with the Intel Core i5 processor and has a respectable 8GB of RAM out of the box.

Microsoft has included a sharp 12.4-inch PixelSense touchscreen display, and you can download apps from the Windows Store. It’s not the most advanced laptop — you don’t expect that at this price — but it’s still very much recommended.
