PM Modi lauds Erdogan win, hopes for boost in Turkiye ties
Relieving Turks of the country's worst economic crisis since the 1990s is one of Erdogan's urgent priorities.
NEW DELHI: Congratulating Turkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his re-election, PM Narendra Modi said Monday he was confident that bilateral cooperation between the two countries on global issues will continue to grow.
"Congratulations @RTErdogan on re-election as the President of Turkiye! I am confident that our bilateral ties and cooperation on global issues will continue to grow in the coming times," tweeted Modi.
India and Turkiye have had an uneasy relationship because of the latter's support to Pakistan on the Kashmir issue. Erdogan himself has repeatedly raised the same issue at the UN even though he seems to have toned down the rhetoric in the past couple of years. Turkiye was also one of the OIC countries that did not turn up at the G20 meeting in Srinagar last week.
Erdogan won re-election Sunday, extending his rule into a third decade as the country reels from high inflation and the aftermath of an earthquake that levelled several cities.
